About the Blackboard Innovators Award

For nearly a decade, Blackboard's community awards program has annually recognized and honored innovation and excellence in Blackboard's global community of practice, where millions of teachers and learners work every day to redefine what is possible in e-learning.

In 2008, Blackboard introduced the Blackboard Innovators Award honoring those who enable educational innovations with tools that directly impact teaching and learning. The Innovators Award rewards those who give back to the community by sharing their expertise and recognizes meaningful contributions to the Blackboard Developer Community.

2008 Winners

Peter Fokkinga, University of Groningen

Contribution: Collaborated with Malcolm Murray to contribute source code and a tutorial on how to write a command-line-driven Building Block. This tutorial has become the most-viewed, client-contributed tutorial on EduGarage.
From the winner: "The Blackboard Developer Community is a great place for beginners to get help over common pitfalls, but it's equally great for seasoned developers..."

Andrew Martin, Newcastle University

Contribution: Lead developer of the most-download open source Building Block - Blackboard Web Services. Blackboard would like to acknowledge the contributions of Andrew and the OSCELOT community for their work on common Web Services and Building Blocks.

Malcolm Murray, Durham University

Contribution: Collaborated with Peter Fokkinga to contribute source code and a tutorial on how to write a command-line-driven Building Block. This tutorial has become the most-viewed, client-contributed tutorial on EduGarage.
From the winner: "I think the greatest asset of Blackboard is the expertise and energy present in the user communities. The Blackboard Developer Community is an excellent example of this. It connects developers around the globe who work together to create and improve tools for use across the community..."

Pieter Vandepitte, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

Contribution: Support of collaborative developer efforts, working with Blackboard to improve developer capabilities, and contributor of the most downloaded open source developer tool.

Stephen Vickers, The University of Edinburgh

From the winner: "I get great satisfaction from finding ways of applying technology to empower colleagues and students to achieve their goals more easily and effectively. By providing access to examples of good practice and peer support, the Blackboard Developer Community enables me to develop the skills necessary to accomplish this within our Learning Management System, as well as share what I learn in the process."
